Endodontic Treatment
Widely known as root canal therapy, the primary aim of endodontic treatment is a permanent pain relief for those suffering from inflammation of the tissues that extend from a tooth down into its root canal. The pain from this condition can be very severe.
What causes the inflammation?
The majority of cases are due to deep decay leading to bacterial infection of the pulp, which is the tissue in the centre of the tooth. Another possible cause is trauma: a tooth that is cracked as the result of a sudden heavy impact or chronic heavy trauma, can subsequently become infected and require root canal treatment.
What are the symptoms?
The main symptoms to look out for are:
- Severe toothache when chewing or directly applying pressure to the tooth in question
- Sensitivity to both hot and cold temperatures, which can be felt long after the hot or cold substance has been removed from the mouth
- Swelling and tenderness in surrounding gums
- Discolouration of the affected tooth
Treatment
Root canal therapy (RCT) involves the removal of the infected pulp, the thorough cleansing and disinfection of the affected area, followed by the filling and sealing of the successfully treated cavity.
