Snoring / Sleep Apnoea
Snoring is caused by soft tissue such as your tongue, throat and palate relaxing too much and partially blocking your airway. When you breathe, the air squeezes past these obstructions causing them to vibrate and make noise. Those with excess weight can also be more likely to snore as the added weight constricts the airway.
Snoring can be more than just a minor issue. Snorers may suffer from a potentially serious condition called obstructive sleep apnoea. This is when the soft tissues completely block your airway during your sleep. The lack of oxygen and increase of carbon dioxide in your blood tricks your brain into thinking you aren’t breathing. This kicks your body into action, forcing you to suddenly wake up gasping for air. These episodes can last up to a minute and can happen multiple times during sleep. If our patient’s complain of a history of snoring/sleep apnoes, we recommend they be referred to a sleep physician for assessment.
We make mandibular advancement splints (MAS), that are custom made to help with non- severe sleep apnoea. You will need a referral from a sleep physician to have the MAS made.
